Merenneito - Mermaid

Paikallinen Suonenjoen taideseura järjestää näyttelyn "Yhdessä", johon pyydettiin aikuisten ja lasten yhdessä tekemiä taideteoksia. Minä sain inspiraation tyttäreni maalaamasta merenneitotaulusta, ja tein taulun merenneidon kolmiulotteiseksi veistokseksi. Merenneito on vähän hurjaluontoinen ja ei ihan niin kaunis ja lempeä... ja se on aika suuri verrattuna muihin veistoksiini. Näyttelyn avajaiset ovat huomenna, jännityksellä odotan miten tyttäreni taulu ja veistos on näyttelyyn aseteltu. Vein sinne myös aiemmin yhdessä tekemämme lentävän lohikäärmeen.

Merenneidon runko on tehty rautalangasta, muotoa kasvatettu alumiinifoliolla, ja sen jälkeen tehty kova pohjamuoto Aves Apoxie Sculpt -epoksimassalla. Iho on polymeerimassaa, ja pyrstön suomut abalone-simpukan palasia upotettuna epoksimassaan. Evät ovat fantasy film -sellofaania ja rautalankaa, hiukset lampaanvillaa. Oli tosi hauskaa tehdä veistos tyttäreni tekemän kuvan inspiroimana, aivan varmasti tällaista yhteistyötä tulee lisää. Jos haluatte nähdä enemmän tyttäreni maalauksia, niitä löytyy instagramista. Tällainen vähän erilainen työ oli tähän hetkeen juuri se mitä tarvitsin, ja nyt on taas into tehdä lisää veistoksia pitkän tauon jälkeen!

The local art society has an exhibition "Together", where they asked for art made together byt children and parents. I got an inspiration from my daughter's mermaid painting, and I sculpet the mermaid as a statue. It is a bit wild and scary mermaid, a bit different from usual, and it is quite big compared to my other sculpts. The exhibition opens tomorrow, and I am excited to see how the mermaid and the painting look there together. I also took there the dragon that we made together with my daughter a few years ago.

The mermaid has a wire skeleton, then bulked up with aluminium foil. Then I made the basic form with Aves Apoxie Sculpt, and sculpted the skin over it wit polymer clay. The scales on the tail are abalone shell pieces mounted in the epoxy clay. Fins are fantasy film and wire, hair is lambswool. It was so much fun to sculpt and be inspired by my daughter's painting, and I am sure we will make more collaborations like this in the future. Merenneito - A Mermaid

Suomen Nukketaiteilijoilla on Suomen käsityön museossa Jyväskylässä 10-vuotisjuhlanäyttely. Yksi aihepiiri oli tehdä kuuluistasta maalauksesta nukke, ja minä valitsin esikuvaksi John William Waterhousen merenneitomaalauksen vuodelta 1910. Tässä hän on, minun versionani.

The Finnish Doll Society has 10 year anniversary exhibition in the Craft Museum of Finland in Jyväskylä. One theme for the dolls was to make a doll from a famous painting, and I chose John William Waterhouse's mermaid from 1910. Here is my version of her.

Nyt se on valmis! Tässä pikaista esimakua miltä hän näyttää... huomenna otan enemmän kuvia. (Tai siis tänään, kello on jo pitkällä keskiviikossa.)

Now she is finished! Here is a quick preview of how she looks... I will take more pics tomorrow. (Actually today, it is many hours over midnight.)

Pyrstö - Tail

Olen tuijotellut pienenpieniä suomuja tänään... tässä hieman esimakua pyrstön väristä, joka on hyvin vaalea ja hento. Se on vielä keskeneräinen, pintaan tulee vähän kimallusta ja kiiltoa.

I have been staring at tiny scales today... here's a preview of the tail colour which is very pale and subtle. The tail is still unfinished, it will get some sparkle and gloss.

Pyrstökäs - Tailish

Kauan kesti ennen kuin tartuin taas merenneitoprojektiin... mutta nyt olen raaputtanut ja hionut, ja pyrstökäs on maalausta vaille. Pyrstön väri on vielä harkinnassa, saas nähdä mitä siitä tulee! Tällä kertaa pyrstöevä on tehty uudella tavalla, se on kokonaan massaa. Kivi on tehty polyuretaanista, siinä on metallia sisällä, joten se on tukeva!

(Hmm, is tailish a word?) It took a while before I got my hands on the mermaid project again... but now she is scraped and sanded, waiting for painting. I am still trying to decide the tail colour, we will see what it will be! This time I made the tail fin new way, it is made from clay. The stone is made from polyurethane, it has some metal inside, so it is nice and steady!

Työn alla - In Progress

Auringossa unelmoiva merenneito alkaa saada lihaa luidensa ympärille... Hän istuu kivellä riiputtaen pyrstöään reunan yli.

A basking mermaid is getting some flesh around her bones... She is sitting on a rock, her tail hanging over the edge.

Meressa!

Pitkä, pitkä oli veistoksen tie merenneito Meressaksi, mutta nyt hän on valmis! Ehkä vielä jonkunlainen kaulakoru on tulossa, mutta enpä malttanut olla kuvaamatta ja näyttämättä häntä nyt... Nimi on kanadalaisen asiakkaan keksimä, eikö olekin mainio! Ä:n pilkut on jätetty pois, ja siinä on täydellinen merenneidon nimi.

Long, long was the road for the sculpture to become mermaid Meressa, but now she is finished! Perhaps I will add some kind of necklace, but couldn't help myself taking pics and showing her off now... The Canadian customer invented the name for her, isn't it clever! The dots for Finnish letter ä has been left off and it is a perfect name for a mermaid; "meressä" means:"in the sea."

Pyrstö - Tail

Merenneito sai purppuran-sinisenkirjavan pyrstön. Kuvista näkyy miten väri muuttuu taustan mukaan, musta tausta saa värit leiskumaan! Odottelen hiusmateriaalia saapuvaksi...

The mermaid got purple/blue tail and fin. You can see in the pics how the background changes the colour, black background makes very intensive colours! I am waiting for the hair mohair to arrive...

Viimeinkin - At Last

Kylläpä se kesti, mutta viimein merenneito on saanut kädet ja pyrstön, ja se odottelee seuraavaksi hiomista ja sitten pyrstöönsä suomuja.

It took time, but finally the mermaid has got arms and hands and tail, now she is waiting for sanding and scales for the tail.

Edistystä - Progress

Onneksi minulla on kärsivällinen asiakas... tämä merenneito tarvitsee näköjään ikuisuuden valmistuakseen! Meillä on ollut muurari tekemässä uutta uunia, ja en oikein pysty keskittymään työhön, mutta olen sentään vartalon saanut tehtyä.

I am lucky to have a patient customer... this mermaid takes forever to be finished! We have had a mason making us the new fireplace, and I haven't been able to concentrate in sculpting much, but I have managed to sculpt her torso.

Kasvot - The face

Pelkkään remonttihommaan en ole aikaani kuluttanut, kaiken keskellä olen kuin olenkin saanut tilaustyötä tehtyä! Kasvot ovat valmiit.

I haven't used all my time in the renovation hassle, in the middle of everything I have managed to sculpt the face for the commission mermaid!

Runko - Armature

Runko on valmis, nyt odotellaan sen kuivumista, että pääsen kasvoja muotoilemaan! Vähän pitää säätää tuota asentoa vielä (vuolla selästä), ei ole ihan sama kuin luonnoksessa.

The armature is finished, now just waiting for it to dry, so I can start her face! I have to adjust a bit her pose (carve her back) it isn't exactly the same than in the sketch.

Merenneitoluonnos - Mermaid sketch

Aloittelen juuri tilaustyötä, josta tulee merenneito. Tämä piir- tämäni luonnos on mallina. Jalusta on melkein valmis, oli mielenkiintoista saada merenneito "leijumaan" ilmassa, siis kellumaan vedessä... kuvia tulee kunhan on jotain näyttämistä.

I am making a commission sculpture, a mermaid. This is a sketch I have drawn, she will be based on it. The base is almost finished, it was very interesting to get the mermaid floating in the air - like in water... I'll post pics when I have something to show.
